You Raise Me Up

There are some songs that just make me FEEL so much and this is one of them. My favourite version of it is by, believe it or not, Westlife. When I hear it I just want to dance ...

You Raise Me Up

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit awhile with me

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be
You raise me up to more than I can be

Toddlers & Tiaras: Kylie

My fascination with this show has yet not dwindled, and the most recent episode I watched introduced me to the ever so bubbly and delightful - Kylie.

Kylie is a very cute child and for the most part is quite well behaved. She is full of energy and spunk and seems to be a very happy 'glitz girl.' Kylie appears to actually love performing and whole process of pageants, and luckily she also has that in built determination and drive that will ensure she achieves her dreams in life.

Practicing Hard!

She has goals!

Kylie has a very supportive and cool young mum, who thankfully has enough energy to keep up with her boistrous daughter.Kylie's mum is clearly very proud of her 3 year old and states that her daughter 'rocked it on the stage today!'

Kylie is only 3 years of age. But boy is she talented! Kylie rocks it as MJ and as Sandi from Grease during this pageant. She is one of the most confident and coordinated 3 year olds I have ever seen. I honestly believe that Kylie is the type of kid that will grow up into a famous starlet as she seems to just have 'it.' While Kylie being the 'showstopper' that she is may grow up to be a nightmare, at the moment she is one of the coolest kids I have seen on this show. Go Kylie!

Oh and just a quick memo to the mother that dressed their kid up like Madonna with the cone bra -

WTF?

Buried

I hadn’t been to the movies in ages, and so on the weekend I went and saw the new Thriller/Drama/Mystery flick – Buried.

Starring Ryan Reynolds (and literally it’s just Ryan Reynolds!) it was quite an intense film that made quite a few valid political points and actually rather depressed me. Rather than write a synopsis of my own, I will just quote the Internet Movie Database for the plot of the film:

“Waking groggy in pitch darkness, Paul Conroy, an American truck driver working as a contractor in Iraq in 2006, slowly realizes he is trapped inside a wooden coffin, buried alive. With his cigarette lighter, he can see the trap he is in, and he quickly realizes that there's not enough air for him to live long. He finds within the coffin a working cellphone, which allows him contact with the outside world. But the outside world proves not to be very helpful at finding a man buried in a box in the middle of the Iraqi desert. Paul must rely on his best resource—himself.”

‘Buried,’ a film by Rodrigo Cortes, was done on a low budget of $3 million. There were no action shots outside of the coffin that Ryan’s character was trapped in, and the screen was only lit at intervals by a lighter, shoddy torch and glow tube. Now Ryan Reynolds, one of my most drool worthy male actors of all time, is absolutely outstanding in this movie. While it would have been better if there was more light in the film (not possible due to the setting and situation) to admire his fine features, it was clearly evident despite the flickering darkness that it was Ryan’s excellent ability as an actor that made his character so convincingly believable… I too felt claustrophobic along with him! To me this not only proved his remarkable talent, but it demonstrated the power of the human imagination as for the whole 94 minutes I felt on edge as I wondered what would happen next and how he would escape this nightmarish predicament.

Being buried alive is a truly terrible thought. I’d like to think I’d just try and go to sleep and try to just let death take me peacefully, but like in Paul Conroy’s situation, if there was a small glimmer of hope that somehow you could get out you would spend all your time practically trying to do so. I really felt for Paul being stuck buried underground, but one line from the kidnappers also struck a chord for me as they responded to Paul saying that he was not a soldier, he was not attacking them, he was an innocent man and so could they please let him go? They said that they too were normal innocent people, not terrorists, not insurgents, but yet American’s attack their country, bomb their cities, kill their families because of Saadam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. This thought just made me hate the whole idea of war even more then I already do.

Buried was a great movie, but I did find it quite depressing when at the end as Paul was on the phone to the man that said ‘he was on his way to dig him up and yes he was there, hang on Paul!’ only to discover he was at the wrong location. The last moment before Paul’s death he went from having hope that he would be out (and having told his wife that they were coming to get him) to hearing ‘oh god I’m sorry Paul’ and finding out he actually was going to die and not be saved. The feeling of terror and despair washing over him in his last moments would have been horrendous.

The whole movie I thought surely he would get out, something would happen, at the very end when the sand covered his face it would go black and then come up with an ‘after’ scene and he’d be in a hospital with his wife and child by his side….. but no, it didn’t. He was just buried alive :(

I guess that’s why the film was called ‘Buried’.

Chucking a 'Sickie'

Today I'm chucking a sickie. Yay -  no work for me! Mainly because yesterday was so shit, and work doesn't make me particularly happy, and I really just needed a day for me. And so far it's been very productive! I've cleaned and mopped and prepared a job application (which I'm going to hand deliver shortly) and caught up on some washing. All very exciting things.

Not.

But at least I've accomplished something on this slack day. My reason for calling in sick was 'I don't feel very well' and that was that. A bug has been going around the office lately so at least it's kind of plausible. As the phone was ringing and I was waiting to advise them of my absence, I pondered what the best reason for my day off would be. I came up with this list of top 10 sickie excuses:

  1. Migraine. Always a goody because its an OHS concern for the employee to sit in front of a computer screen all day - plus it can knock you out for 2 days if you want an extended break.
  2. Cold/Cough. You can play it up a day before and like the Migraine excuse, it can buy you a few days.
  3. Food Poisoning. No one can deny the horrible effects of this - perfect excuse for a day off.
  4. Don't feel very well. This was the excuse today...if they ask you for more  details just say 'I feel nauseous and feverish' and that generally does the trick.
  5. Gastro. Need I say anymore?
  6. Car trouble. Saying you've broken down, waiting for a mechanic, not sure when you will be in, and then ringing back 2 hours later saying you're not going to be in today....excellent!
  7. Burst water main/pipes at home. You have to stay til it's fixed, and that could be hours!
  8. If you have children (unfortunately I don't) they often provide the best excuse coz it's not you that is sick, it's them.
  9. Insomnia - say you have been up since 1am and have a dr 's appointment to get some medication. One day doesn't require a medical certificate, so you're home free.
  10. 'I can't come in today, but I can't tell you why.' Makes it sound so serious and personal that 99% of people will not dare ask any further.

Ok I'm off now to take in my job application, and maybe have a little nap :)

Ms. Lim. P. Ashtray

I wasn't going to write another post today, but in light of new events that have happened in my oh so joyful workplace (can you sense the sarcasm?) I have decided to vent about one of my wonderful (hardly!)colleagues....for the sake of anonymity we shall call her Ms. Lim. P. Ashtray.

Now she is not ranga, although the picture might suggest she is, but she does smoke, as her name suggests.  Ms. Lim. P. Ashtray is one of those most annoying people who is always right, always smarter than you, always experiencing worse hardships in life than you and generally just being a whiney, stuck up bitch. Needless to say, I don't like her very much.

Bags being Angelina coz she is way hotter!
She has this habit of when the managers are speaking, to almost talk over the top of them. She basically repeats what they are saying and uses lots of hand gestures to emphasise 'her' point and tries to sound smart. It's not a good look. It's actually really annoying. To make it worse has this drawly, whiney, monotone voice that just sludges through the conversation. It doesn't make her particularly appealing to listen to.

Ms. Lim. P. Ashtray also annoys me because she is one of those individuals that likes to brag about herself and her 'qualifications.' She is constantly saying 'I'm qualified' or "I can see past that basic issues because I have a degree in ______'. Fair enough you're qualified, big whoop-di-doo, but it doesn't mean you have to constantly state it and use it against everyone else! Ms. Lim. P. Ashtray also makes it look like she is doing lots of work but really she is not. She is delegating it out to her support worker. And yet she still complains she has sooooooooo much work to do (which she doesn't). Sometimes I feel like saying 'Well you're the most qualified, you should be doing most of the work!' (even though she's not!). Another issue that annoys me is her leaving early to go to meetings.....oookay so a meeting starts at 2pm, so that means you have to leave at 12.30pm and not come back for the rest of the day? (when we all know it only takes an hour to complete the meeting and therefore plenty of time to finish work for the day)....oh but I forget, she has a support worker to do that.

I could go on and on about Ms. Lim. P. Ashtray but it's almost 5pm and time to go home for the day. Thank fricken god!

Chilean Miners Rescued

After 69 days trapped undergroud, the Chilean Miners have been rescued - all 33 of them.

Media coverage celebrated the triumph of the human spirit and the realisation that humans can be a lot more resilient than we ever imagined.

The one whom I most most interested to see come into the light was Johnny Barrios Rojas. He gained notoriety as the man whose double life was exposed while he was stuck miles underground; with both his wife of 28 years and his mistress of 4 years holding vigils for him at the mine site. Initially the women did not realise they were praying for the same man, but when they did, as you can imagine, it was not pretty.

And today, when Johnny was rescued and emerged rather sheepishly, it was his mistress who was there waiting for him.

I really hope the world media outlets do some sort of follow up on this story, as I would love to know what ends up happening in this love traingle.

Come on Channel 10!

Last night it was the team final for Rhythmic Gymnastics in the Commonwealth Games. Now I am a major fan of this artistic sport and was very dissapointed that no part of the final was broadcast on channel 10 as part of their coverage of the Games. Especially as Australia made history by getting out first ever gold medal in the team final!

Congratulations to Naazmi Johnston, Janine Murray and Danielle Prince on this outstanding result.

(L - R: Danielle, Naazmi & Janine)

Fair enough, the final was shown live on Foxtel, but what about us avid fans who don't have foxtel?! All I can hope is that us free to air viewers get a chance to see some of the individual finals - come on Channel 10!

Super Sally

Sally Pearson: Gold Medalist Women’s 100 meters Hurdles
2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games

She was clearly the best, the fastest and finally got the result that proved that – for keeps this time. After everything that she has been through at this Commonwealth Games there was no doubt I don’t think, in any Australian’s mind, that she would come through on top. She put the heartache and frustration behind her and steeled her focus onto her next event. She used her experience as motivation to come away from Delhi a hurdling champion. Well done Sally.

On another note, the Nigerian girl that ran 2nd to Sally in her ill-fated 100 meter sprint (who ended up first after the Pommy protest) has tested positive to a banned substance.

Of course she did. Look at her!

She has subsequently been stripped of her medal.

Toddlers & Tiaras: Makenzie

I was watching Toddlers & Tiara's the other night to witness the toddler tornedo that is .... Makenzie.

Makenzie is 4 years old. She is a 'beauty queen' in her own words, and in my words one of the most spoilt, misbehaved and bratty 4 year olds I have ever seen. Makenzie's mum Juana explains away her child's horrendous behavior with the line "she is an only child." Like that makes it all better?

Makenzie's ear-piercing screams for her "ni-ni" aka her pacifier (what does a 4 year old still have a dummy for anyway?) and her constant demands and need for everything to go her own way wear me down after watching her for only 10 minutes. I don't believe in smacking, but if Makenzie was my child, I would have given her a smack within the first 2 minutes for some of her behavior and lack of respect. Makenzie's mother Juana doesn't seem to discipline her child at all, and somehow mostly remains calm through Makenzie's episodes.

A small fraction of me feels sorry for Juana. She clearly loves Makenzie and is happily waiting for her side stage when she finishes her routines, and Juana doesn't seem to me like a pushy pageant mum. The sad thing is that Makenzie couldn't care less about her mum's support and just appears to take her for granted (given most 4 year olds do but if you have witnessed her behavior you will know what I mean!).

Juana seems to lack confidence to deal with Makenzie's issues, and appears to of gotten to the point where she just lets her child’s behavior slide as the battle she would need to wage to win the war against her terror 4 year old seems to great. But did someone forget to mention to Juana that the parent is meant to be the boss? Not the other way round! And in this situation, Makenzie is clearly the boss.

I don't believe any child could develop such outrageous behavior naturally by 4 years of age; so in a way it is Juana's own fault that she has let it get to this (even though that small fraction of me still feels sad for her). As well as a good smack, I'd be pulling Makenzie right out of pageants, stop the day spa treatments and start with some proper discipline. Get extra support if she needs it but Juana has to do something or this child will be a train wreck in a few years.

Makenzie is a different child once she steps on the stage. She is smiling, looking sweet (if a little OTT for a child her age) and appears to charm the judges. And at the end of the pageant, she does clap enthusiastically for other girls as they receive awards and her potential for being a nice kid almost shines through….until another child admits that she met Makenzie at the pageant today and that after the awards Makenzie tried to bite her…. *sigh*
